Our Mission

Opera doesn’t need a grand hall to move you to tears.

Opera in Odd Places is a new kind of chamber opera company dedicated to taking this ancient art form off the traditional stage and into the heart of Boulder. We believe opera is for everyone – not just those who seek it out in concert halls, but those who stumble upon it in a coffee shop, a canyon, or a former factory.

Johan Sebastian Bach’s “Coffee Cantata”
O.W.L. Coffee Roasters Boulder, CO

Written in 1732, Bach’s Coffee Cantata is a 30-minute comic opera about a father’s attempt to keep his daughter out of the newly popular coffee shops.

The Coffee Cantata is a chamber opera with three singing actors and five instrumentalists — just the right size for an intimate opera experience.

The opera will be sung in English, using a contemporary arrangement and libretto first performed in 2024 by On-site Opera in New York. That production sold out 8 performances and garnered rave reviews. We are thrilled to bring the second production of this new arrangement to Boulder.
